Anyone who knows me knows I love to write. I will be honest, poetry is not my thing. I wish I was good at writing poetry because poetry is an artform that colors the page with the most beautiful words. Unfortunately, my writing class this semester has me writing poetry for the last seven weeks. I am taking a big leap here by sharing with you what I have done so far. There are four different types of poems, Haiku, Cinquain, Tanka, and Villanelle….be kind!
Haiku
Black grey clouds floating
Branches dance to winds music
Symphony of storms
Cinquain
Dog
Small loud
Barking scratching howling
Good dog mischievous beast
Helen
Tanka
Robin red breast sings
Praises for the morning light
Warm rays rise over
Dreaming hills sleeping with hope
of awe for things to come
Villanelle
Feet slip on the dew, crossing the field under the moon
Curious girl dressed in white wondering about
Crickets are stirring, the morning will be here too soon
The summer night humid and it is only June
She is not lost, hers is a familiar route
Feet slip on the dew, crossing the field under the moon
Far in the distance the startled cry of a loon
Fox leads her into the woods a faithful scout
Crickets are stirring, the morning will be here too soon
The first peep as the early morning birds begins to croon
A last dance under the silver leaves child of the night devout
Feet slip on the dew, crossing the field under the moon
Morning’s air moves a soft tune while Night exhales a last swoon
High pitched peepers in the swamp have something to tout
Crickets are stirring, the morning will be here too soon
Day is breaking, make haste, Robin starts her morning tune
Times up, night creatures find your way home throughout
Feet slip on the dew, crossing the field under the moon
Crickets are stirring, the morning will be here too soon
Those are lovely. I, too, feel I don’t have the ability to write poetry. The classes are helping you stretch your mind and do things you never thought you could. That’s the value of education!!
