Squirrels

The squirrels are teasing us with their entertainment and knowledge of the winter morning.  They know full well we are talking about them so they rush towards the window and stop really fast.  Their tails flick and flap quickly and they give us the stare.  We laugh and they pull their tiny paws up to their chest as if to say,

 “Are you laughing at me?”

They scamper and scurry as they jump from one branch to the other and back again.  Mocking us as they climb the squirrel proof bird feeder and as if to add insult they thrash at the seed and spill it on to the snow.  They rush again to the window as we watch their world and again look us in the eye with a dare or is it an invite to come out and join them?

If I was granted one wish; I would wish to be a bushy squirrel as the winter sun rises up over the northern woods.  I would flick my tail and spring from one tree to the other and maybe, just maybe, I too would make a mockery and climb the feeder intended to keep me out.  Yes, I would and just because I could?  I’d spray the morning snow with seeds.

  1. Just this morning I had what looks like a Red Squirrel on my back deck tormenting me and threatening to mess up my freshly washed rugs while drying in the sun! how dare he/she! Happy Spring

  2. I would love for you to write about the chipmunks that scamper and quarrel as they fly across the gutter in our add-on back porch. Try as we might, we cannot find the hole on the outside of the house they are using as a front door to our back room. All I know is they are very noisy! So this story opened my eyes as to how daring they are — LOL.
